What about storytelling? #Writing #TheMechanics

In the pursuit to be GREAT storytellers most writers will discover a lot about themselves.  The process or journey, whatever you choose to call it, in telling a great story can be difficult for some writers and easy for others, however, sometimes it’s a bit of both.

I’d like to say the simple part is starting, but often starting is the hardest part.

Because we are all so different some writers will say starting is easy while others will say beginning a story is the most difficult part. The most important thing to remember is that you have to start. Nothing will be told if you do not write the story.

Some writes will find the task of writing so difficult they will give up. I’d like to think everyone is willing to try. So the simple part of becoming a great storyteller is the trying part. Really it is.  There is nothing to lose and everything to gain when you begin to write a story. It takes nothing more than time and effort. Both cost you nothing.

Learn as you go if that works for you. Now, I don’t like to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes either.  Writing a great story has been as elusive to me as it has been to thousands of other people. And if I am to be honest, in my opinion, I am yet to write a great story. Perhaps one of the next two books I am about to finish will be ‘the one’ great book. But the readers will decide that not me.

Some writers find the mechanics of writing difficult. But let me reassure you that the mechanics can be learned and explored. We writers should tell stories our way. Some writers will use language so exquisitely that another writer will be left feeling inadequate. At this time the writer needs to be responsible for his or her own thoughts and fears. A writer is never so good that he or she can stop learning. That’s a given.

Understanding the mechanics of writing is no easy task. The creative linking of characteristics, those events, situations and emotions that compose our human condition or our existence need to be in those pages. When done well it works beautifully, holding us captivated in the world the writer has created. To have an understanding not just of language but of the true nature of our human condition is so important. For a story to resonate writers need to use good language so a reader feels comfortable with the writing voice, but we must above all trust that we can compose the human condition in its truest form.

Along the way every writer, including myself, will experience disappointment, rejection, be challenged, need to be resilient, deal with learning good language and must learn how to understand the human condition.

Each of us will experience the difficult moments and the easy moments. But please, don’t give up on your passion to write a great story.

So until next time. Be brave and bold in your chosen field of creativity. And never be afraid to explore new techniques.
